When deciding on an acoustic guitar, there are 3 fundamental areas that will have most impact on your choice of instrument. ALL three will impact on the tone and visual of the guitar you end up with and when combined, you end up with a wide range of permutations - which is why its a good idea to understand as much as possible to help you make the right choice.

We could expand this a little further to include string gauge and even the scale length of the guitar - but for this blog we are going to look at the use of Walnut and why you may enjoy it visually, tonally or both!
There are many variations of tonewood that can be used tor the back and sides of acoustic guitars - each one providing visual and tonal properties that may or may not suit your personal taste.
When thinking about tonal properties for back and sides, I tend to imagine a graphic equalizer in my mind - this is my visualization of the tone I expect to hear from the guitar.
Walnut occupies a middle ground between the tonal properties of mahogany and rosewood - both of which are considered as warmer sounding. I would put walnut as having less bass than rosewood and less treble than maple (which is a brighter tone wood)
Walnut will often sound articulate - what I mean by this is the notes sound very clean and well-defined without any excess bass,tone which some can find overpowering, especially when playing fingerstyle.
I see Walnut as being in the "middle" of all the wood choices available so this can make Walnut a good choice for someone looking for a versatile instrument that doesnt push them too far in one direction musically.
Visually - Walnut really is beautiful and can range from simple and elegant through to wonderfully exotic!
