The "Les Paul" style guitars have always been my number 1 guitar to avoid.

They are often popular with first time players and in all the years I was teaching if I ever saw a beginner with a Les Paul , it would always be them who had the problems ranging from balancing the guitar on the leg (they have no real point of balance - much better played with a strap and standing up) through to the very fat, heavier tones which do not sound at all ideal when learning your first few chords - which are suited more to "single coil" tones.
