Frequently Asked Questions About 12 String Guitars – Acoustic, Electro-Acoustic & Electric
What is the difference between a 6-string and a 12-string guitar?
A 12 string guitar features six pairs of strings, with each pair tuned in octaves or unisons. This creates a richer, chorus-like sound ideal for rhythm playing, recording, and full-bodied acoustic tones.
Are 12 string guitars harder to play?
They can require slightly more finger strength, but a proper setup makes a huge difference. Every 12 string guitar from Richards Guitars receives a custom pro setup, ensuring easy playability and perfect tuning stability.
What are the best uses for a 12 string acoustic or electro-acoustic guitar?
12 string acoustic and electro-acoustic guitars excel at adding depth and shimmer to live performances and recordings. They’re perfect for folk, rock, and ambient styles, producing lush harmonic textures that fill any mix.
Do 12 string electric guitars sound different from acoustic ones?
Yes. A 12 string electric guitar produces a bright, chiming tone made famous by bands like The Byrds and R.E.M. It’s ideal for jangly rhythm tones, melodic leads, and studio layering.
After 20 years of only playing acoustic I decided to bite the bullet.. This is my second guitar purchase from Richard having bought a Furch several years ago. My FGN arrived in immaculate condition and beautifully set up playing perfect right out of the box. I was set on wanting a telecaster style guitar but after playing a number of fenders was always left disappointed. The quality of the Japanese craftsmanship cannot be overstated. In terms of how it plays it has a very flat fretboard which is a big plus for me and it does weigh a little more than average for a t style guitar but I guess thats what you get with solid ash bodies. At £849 including the full workshop setup this guitar is an absolute steal. I will enjoy playing it for many years to come.
