Look For The Positivesl

To begin with the JHS website has the RRP on this model at £429 yet Richard is offering it for £386 with a full setup. I understand that the Vintage guitars do sometimes require more effort to setup than other brands, sometimes arriving as "rough diamonds". The only negative comment I have regarding this guitar was that there were a couple of cosmetic flaws in the binding, not enough to bother me, but it may some. Other than that the finish is really good, the gold hardware appears to be decent, no issues with the Wilkinson 'Grover' style tuners, the P90 pickups are versatile and all the electronics work as expected. If you wanted to upgrade the pickups and electronics you could but I wouldn't dismiss the stock setup without hearing them first. That's where I feel this guitar would appeal to two types of guitarist : The Beginner & The Modder. Personally, I won't be changing anything unless it stops working but on a £386 instrument the opportunity to do so is there. In terms of setup I can't fault Richard at all; the nut is cut perfectly, the action is a low and very playable, just enough relief in the neck and the frets have all been rounded and polished. A cheap guitar set up nicely can play just as well as an expensive one, sometimes it just needs a little more help getting there. With a brand like Vintage I think you have to look at all the positives like price, playability, sound as opposed to thinking of it as "just a budget brand". Minor cosmetic issues aside this guitar is a definite winner, one to be played, not hung and admired. Would a guitar three times the price sound or play any better? Perhaps, but the difference may be marginal and it really depends what amp/pedals you are using too. After all, isn't it all in the hands, it's not about what your guitar can do for you . . . It's about what you can do for your guitar.
